ToeFX® Light Therapy – Frequently Asked Questions

What is toenail fungus?

Toenail fungus (onychomycosis) is a common infection that can cause nails to become thick, discolored, brittle, or misshapen. It often develops slowly and can be difficult to treat without professional care.

How does ToeFX® light therapy work?

ToeFX uses a combination of a specialized antifungal gel and LED light therapy. The light activates the gel, allowing it to penetrate the nail and target fungus beneath the surface—safely and effectively.

Is ToeFX treatment painful?

Not at all. ToeFX treatments are completely painless. Most patients simply relax during the 20–30 minute session.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments can vary depending on the severity of the infection. Many patients benefit from a series of treatments over several weeks or months, along with at-home care recommendations.

How long does it take to see results?

Toenails grow slowly, so improvement happens gradually. As your nail grows out, you’ll begin to see clearer, healthier nail replacing the damaged portion. Visible improvement can take a few months.

Is ToeFX better than oral antifungal medication?

ToeFX is a great alternative for patients who cannot or prefer not to take oral medications. It is drug-free and avoids potential side effects associated with antifungal pills. Your podiatrist can help determine which treatment is best for you.

Can toenail fungus come back after treatment?

Yes, toenail fungus can return if preventative steps aren’t taken. That’s why our program focuses not only on treatment, but also on helping prevent recurrence through proper foot hygiene and care.

Am I a good candidate for ToeFX?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have mild to moderate toenail fungus
  • Have not had success with other treatments
  • Cannot take oral antifungal medications
  • Prefer a non-invasive option

A consultation with our podiatrists will determine the best plan for your needs.

Is there any downtime after treatment?

Nope! You can return to your normal activities immediately after your session.

Will insurance cover ToeFX treatment?

ToeFX is typically considered an elective treatment and may not be covered by insurance. Our team can go over pricing and options during your visit.

Will my nail look normal again?

That’s the goal—and in many cases, patients see a significant improvement in the appearance of their nails. As the treated nail grows out, healthier, clearer nail replaces the damaged portion. While results can vary depending on the severity of the infection, our focus is always on helping you achieve the best possible outcome.

Is this worth it if I’ve already tried other treatments?

We hear this all the time. Toenail fungus can be incredibly stubborn, and many patients come to us after trying creams, home remedies, or even medications without success.

ToeFX offers a different approach. By combining in-office treatment with a comprehensive care plan, we’re able to target the fungus more effectively and support long-term results. For many patients, it’s the solution they’ve been looking for.
