Don’t let foot injuries keep you from your fitness resolutions!

In the New Year, do not forget to keep your feet in tip-top shape while following through with your resolutions to get fit. 

Start new workouts gradually— Increase your stamina and the length of your workouts gradually to avoid overuse injuries such as stress fractures or tendon strains and sprains. Also, incrementally increasing resistance or the amount of weight used can prevent overuse injuries. Stretching your muscles before and after workouts can help prevent these types of injuries. 

Wear the right shoes and socks—Wear well-fitting athletic shoes designed for the type of exercise, activity, or sport. Shoes that support the arch and are not flexible are recommended. Also, shoes should have the appropriate width and length to prevent pain on the sides of the foot, nerve compression injuries, toenail injuries, and other conditions. Wearing cotton or non-slip socks can help avoid painful blisters, which can become infected and cause more serious issues.

Use good technique— Improper exercise techniques can result in injury to the tendons or ligaments in your feet and ankles. Therefore, it is important to maintain good posture throughout the exercise and use equipment correctly to prevent strain on soft tissue or bones in the foot and ankle.
