In the United States, more than 10 million people suffer from Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and many of these cases go undiagnosed.

The disease involves “hardening” of the arteries and develops when leg arteries become clogged with plaque that blocks the blood flow to the legs and feet.  Just like clogged arteries in the heart, clogged arteries in the legs raise the risk of heart attack, stroke, leg ulcers and even amputation. PAD is also caused by the same risk factors that lead to heart disease. Those at risk for PAD include anyone over the age of 50, especially African Americans, those who smoke or have smoked as well as those who have diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, or a personal or family history of vascular disease, heart attack, or stroke.

Symptoms of PAD include leg fatigue, tiredness, leg cramps, sores or cuts on the legs, feet or toes that are not healing, decreased hair growth, and cooler temperature changes in the skin of the feet or legs and pain in the legs or feet that increases with activities.

Peripheral Arterial Disease can be a devastating disease resulting in gangrene and even amputation. Fortunately, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of PAD can save limbs, restore mobility and decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke.
